"After the long search for a Great Loop boat that would not drain the bank account, not hit bottom during low tides, is fast enough to beat out a storm or make a bridge opening, the Camano 31 was the chosen one.   The selection proved right on as we made some bridges before they closed for an hour or were able to get under them with our 12 foot height (bimini down), cruised through some low tide areas that our 3.3 inch draft could handle, beat out a storm on Lake Michigan that we didn't want to get caught in, and actually enjoyed the ride up the New Jersey Coast as this trawler could cruise at 12 knots which keeps the stern ahead of the 2-4 foot following sea.  The 12,000lb Camano proved easy to handle in locks and was fully equipped with generator, autopilot, and fly bridge as we wanted nothing to block the nature shots.  The boat had a lower helm that we piloted in maybe 2% of the trip during a rainstorm or two.  The fly bridge also provided enough space for six to party on after a day's cruise and we enjoyed the fuel consumption of only 1,945 diesel gallons on our trip doing the Lake Erie Route.  Also, our fear of not having enough fuel between Hoppies and Green Turtle Bay were unfounded as we only consumed 70 gallons of fuel (our 2003 model held 130 gallons).  Pocket type trawlers do have limits like if you're over 6 feet tall, the cabin may be too small or if you anchor out allot, the holding tank not large enough.  Shortly after starting the Loop, we decided early on that we enjoyed marinas more than anchoring so we could easily walk every small town and didn't need a large capacity holding tank.  Also, it was hot in 2013 so plugging in the ac to shore power was wonderful after a day on the water. 

Following Captain Bob's advice -The Camano 31 proved to be for us the "smallest boat we could feel comfortable on."  Hope the above experience answers some of your questions or raises other questions in your boat search. "

Comfort underway is derived by many factors, one of which is hull shape.  The KEELFORM® hull does not "roll" like a full displacement hull form and does not "pound" like a planing hull form.  The Camano KEELFORM® is unique.  Forward, her stem is deep, as it would be in a displacement hull.  Aft, the bottom flattens out into hard chines, just like a planing boat, but has a huge keel and barn-door style rudder that would never be found on a planing yacht.  The keel, which provides about 28 percent of the hull's displacement, is one of the elements of design that makes the Camano an adept performer at any speed.

The 200 hp Volvo® turbo-charged engine is placed deep in the engine compartment, along with the fluid storage.  This places the center of gravity lower than in most boats, thus allowing a steady and level ride. Comfort is also derived from the low noise level, when underway, because of a combination of a quiet diesel and a well-insulated engine room.

Loop veteran!  I'm not one to crow about a boat being the "best" on the market, because I have and can not see them all.  However I have been doing this 19 years and "12 Volt Man" condition is superb and has to be in the top boats.  With her pampered diesel, optional generator, 2000 watt inverter, A/C, spotless interior, bilge and engine room, lift kept, etc., she is cruise ready and turn key.  These owners purposely awaited the 2003 model, over an earlier model,  as Camano added a standard bow thruster and increase the fuel by 1/3 to 133 gallons.   Owners have completed cruising and are seeking offers.  If vessel condition, equipment and buying from a caring owner is important to you, "12 Volt Man" is the boat for you!
