1988 Cheoy Lee Golden Wave Ketch/Cutter (4'6" Draft)
Boat Type: Racer and Cruiser Address: Port Charlotte, FL, US Price: $129,900

Overview

GREAT VALUE AT $129K!!!

Here is a chance to own this solid, blue water cruiser/racer that is for sale by her original owner. She has many safe blue water miles, including two transatlantic crossings.

Here is a narrative from the current owner on his voyages: "I gave up on counting ocean miles when I went over 50k, but have estimated it to be around 100k now. I have sailed from New York to the Caribbean perhaps five times. One trip to Rio Dulche, the centerboard was nice there. Another trip to the Caribbean to Cancun and back to Florida. During this trip, 1993 or 1994, I encountered strong winds between Curacao and Cancun. At the time, I had a worn main sail, double reefed and a heavy duty staysail(between the jib and main). The main blew out after partially breaking the main boom, now new and replaced. I was very short handed, but the boat really performed well. I reached Cozumel and sailed with mizzen and jib back to Florida. The next year I sailed from Fort Lauderdale, Bermuda, Azores, Gibraltar, Greece, Canaries, St Lucia, and back to Florida. The boat has lived up to and exceeded her expectations, the reason I kept her for twenty years.

The main was reduced to clear the 65' bridges on the intercoastal waterway. Sail riggers always commented on the size and strength of the mast. Most of the solid rod rigging was replaced with dynaform. The original rod rigging was continuous and one intermediate stay broke, so to be safe the rest was replaced.

She is a most solid boat, the hull is solid fiberglass. I have never had any concerns about the boat, the crew and myself were the less strong.

All in all, I have sailed her single handed from Florida to New York non stop in a week. And back with a little more time."

Built in Hong Kong by Cheoy Lee and marketed under the Golden Wave name. New cushions, refinished interior, an almost new Perkins diesel and much more has been recently done. The interior layout can accommodate at least 8 easily. The refrigerator/freezer are inline and in the center of the roomy galley.

She has been repainted both topsides and bottom. An easily maintained new outer teak outer deck has been laid. The versatile ketch/cutter setup allows for great flexibility in the sail plan, and easily single-handed. The ketch rig plus centerboard allows intercoastal and shallow water cruising. You'll notice her racing background when you see the hydraulic adjusters for the backstays of the main giving good sailing performance either in the ocean or club racing.

Call today and start sailing tomorrow......

Plus, the owner is open to deliver her to other areas of the country so don't let her being in Florida stop you from calling!

Accommodations
Working from forward to aft, the layout starts with a crews sleeping area or storage area in the forepeak. Just aft is an ensuite shower/head which leads into a cabin with a large sleeping area to port and bunks which have been converted to contained storage areas on the starboard side. Aft of this area is the salon and galley. The galley is on the port side and the large settee which converts to a beth is on the starboard side.

Aft of the settee, is the nav station. Aft of the nav station is an open area with bunk berths which is currently used for storage. Across from the nav station is a captain's quarters which has an ensuite head which is aft of the galley and a large berth running the remaining length of the port side.

The engine is located under the cockpit and the companionway stairs are between the nav station and the captain's quarters.

Galley
The u-shaped galley is forward of the captain's quarters. The stove, storage and sinks run down the port side. Centerline of the boat is the large refrigerator/freezer. Each compartment has it's own holding plate and the refrigerator section is front opening towards the bow. (This is nice as items won't tend to fall out when she is sailing and heeling.)

Deck and Hull Equipment
The hull has been repainted recently with Petit EasyPoxy. The bottom was rebarrier coated and is currently painted with West Marine CPP bottom paint. The deck has had the teak removed with new teak bonded and installed along the outer border and has been painted with a non-skid in the inter areas of the foredeck.

The centerboard is controlled from the cockpit.

She has a large aft cockpit. Two seats lift up for easy access to two large lazerettes. The helm is impressive with a wheel that is so big that the cockpit has a groove in the floor to accommodate it's diameter. This large wheel adds to the ease of sailing her from either side. The wheel has a special gear to release it to reduce the work on the autopilot.

Mechanical & Engine Room

Sails and Rigging
With her racing pedigree, the rigging has both wire and rod. The backstays on the main mast can be hydraulically adjusted from the helm. The shrouds are run inboard of the deck for better sheeting angles on the jib.

Brokers Comments
This is a boat that looks both seaworthy, spacious and fast even when on land. She has had many improvements and would only take a little finishing to make her ready to cruise. The owner is an experienced captain and cruiser and is willing to help the new owners get started.
