1987 Gulfstar "Sailcruiser"
Boat Type: Motorsailer Address: Newburyport, MA, US Price: $289,000

Overview

The Gulfstar 54 was designed and built by Richard Lazzara, founder and designer of Gulfstar Yachts. Gulfstar commenced building yachts in 1970. Lazzara and Gulfstar designed and built quality power and sail boats from 36 to 68 feet in length. The most popular designs were the Gulfstar 44, 47, 50 and 54. The 54 is known as the Gulfstar 54 Sailcruiser. Gulfstar built 23 Sailcruisers between 1985 and 1987. This particular Gulfstar 54 was built in 1987, and benefits handsomely from Gulfstar's many years of design and construction expertise across both power and sail boats, ranging in size from 36-68 feet. Lazzara Yachts is still in business in Florida, now producing impeccable, 3-8 million dollar, mega-yachts.

The 54 Sailcruiser is a medium displacement, twin engine, center cockpit ketch. The 54 is characterized by her deck saloon design and fully enclosable fiberglass hardtop with large windows. This 54 has a beautiful dark blue hull with contrasting white deck and coach house. The 54's interior offers a very large saloon, three generous staterooms and two full heads each with separate shower. Her interior teak woodwork and cabinetry is of very high quality. All compartments have beautiful, satin finished teak in excellent condition, with teak and holly sole throughout. Her joinery is first rate, furniture quality, with custom rounded corners and superior finishing.

Construction of her hull, deck and coach house is for strength and weight savings, with balsa cored biaxial, unidirectional, hand-laid fiberglass and epoxy. Her keel ballast is cast lead. The substantial fuel and water tanks, located amidships, are also constructed of fiberglass and epoxy. She is ketch rigged with two aluminum masts and booms. For sail area, with mainsail, headsail and mizzen she carries 950 sq ft of fore & aft sail, plus a full sized cruising spinnaker. The main and headsail are furling sails, the main having in-mast furling. The ketch rig permits the Gulfstar 54 to carry sail area equivalent to a comparably sized sloop but with shorter masts. The mainmast has a bridge clearance height of 55 ft, making her bridge friendly in inter-coastal waterways. The ketch rig also enables a powerful yet flexible sail plan which is easily handled by a crew of two. The 54 is powered by very efficient, twin, 66 HP Yanmar 4JH8TE diesels, each driving 2.6:1 reduction gears, 1 1/4" SS drive shafts and twin bronze feathering propellers. In addition she has a robust bow-thruster, enabling easy close quarters maneuvering and docking. She motors and sails very well and is much more maneuverable than other comparably sized sailboats. Her long, shallow-draft keel, drawing just under 5 feet (4' 11"), enables her to sneak in and out of almost any anchorage or harbor worldwide, including the Bahamas and South Florida.

Main Saloon & Galley
The saloon is a wonderfully spacious, cozy and functional area. The Gulfstar 54 with it's raised sole, "deck saloon" design was ahead of it's time. The recent years deck saloon designs have proven very popular. The cabin sole is raised to allow a spacious engine room below and easy 300 degree visibility. The saloon is surrounded on three sides, by large lexan windows, looking forward, port and starboard. Headroom throught the boat is 6'4" to 6'6". The navigation and electronics area is immediately to port of the companionway. The step down galley is immediately to starboard of the companionway. Forward and to starboard is a spacious and comfortable "U" shaped settee with an adjustable height table. The saloon sole is teak and holly in excellent condition. Beautiful and functional custom teak cabinetry fills both the port and starboard cabin sides. To port are seven cabinets, two bookshelves, a convenient fold out bar, bottle storage, and an ice-maker. To starboard are four cabinets and two bookshelves. An entertainment center with a Sony flatscreen display is amidship on the saloon forward bulkhead.
