The St Francis 44 is one of many sailing and power yachts designed by Angelo Lavranos. He is South African but now lives in New Zealand. He began designing yachts in 1975. Over the years he designed many types of boats, sail and power, custom and production. These have included ocean racing yachts like Open 60s, super yachts to 40 meters, commercial yachts, monohulls, and sailing and power catamarans. His designs have won many well known trans-ocean and round the world races. In addition to the St Francis 44, other sailing catamarans he has designed include the St Francis 48 and 50, the Kynsna 440 and 470 and the Admiral 38, 40, 48 and 50. All of these are very successful and popular designs. St. Francis Marine catamarans are built in South Africa. Production began in 1990. The factory is a modern 3,000 sq meter facility located on St Francis Bay, 100 km west of Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
The St Francis 44 uses quadriaxial fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin, over a foam core, then methodically vacuum bagged for optimum strength and minimum weight. The basic boat has an LOA of 13.5 m, beam 7.2 m, displacement 6,500 kg, (LOA 44', beam 23.7' and displacement 14,300 lbs). The boat has small keels located amidships in each hull and spade rudders. The boat draws .95 m or 3.0'. It carries a 65 sq m mainsail (700 sf) and a 50 sq m genoa, (540 sf), 1,240 sf total. The boat is powered by two Yanmar 27 HP diesels with saildrives located amidships in each hull. The interior offers 4 private cabins and four heads. All four heads have separate showers, with the two forward heads in addition having very nice bathtubs integral to large shower stalls. The full galley is in the port hull. The navigation area is up in the saloon for best visibility. The interior woodwork and cabinetry throughout is finely finished beech wood. The cabin soles in the hulls are teak and holly. The cabin sole in the saloon is carpeted in a resilient, light grey indoor/outdoor carpet. Storage space for cruising is absolutely bountiful, especially amidships in the starboard hull. The boat is well equipped for cruising including a 5 KW generator, solar panels, air-conditioning, a water maker, and twice the normal refrigeration & freezer space. The boat carries a welcome array of up to date electronics including: Raymarine instruments & auto-pilot, Garmin GPS & plotter, Icom SSB & SCS pactor email modem, NASA Navtex, Raytheon radar and an Echo Forward Looking Sonar. Overall the boat is very well designed, strong, in good condition, very well equipped, very creature friendly and fast.

Description, coachhouse, decks, cockpit & helmThe St Francis 44 is typical in design and construction to many catamarans. The construction is of quadriaxial fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin, over a foam core, vacuum bagged for strength and minimum weight. It carries a 65 sq m mainsail (700 sf)and a 50 sq m genoa, (540 sf). Total sail area is 1,240 sf. The boat is powered by two Yanmar 27 HP diesels with saildrives turning two blade fixed propellers. The saildrives are canted inward 45 degrees toward the boat centerline to raise and protect the propellers. The forward structural member between the hulls is a robust tubular aluminum beam, securely bolted to each bow. The after structure between the sterns includes the large cockpit , a full width transom and a full width swim platform. The sterns each have steps down to the water and swim ladders. The coachhouse is a sleek looking, low profile design, also constructed of fiberglass and epoxy. It has five large Lexan windows enabling good visibility and lots of light in the saloon and navigation areas. A single full width trampoline extends from hull to hull and is supported by a centerline tubular aluminum beam securely bolted between the bridge deck and bow beam. The hulls are relatively narrow at the waterline contributing to the boat's speed capability.
